Photo Competition 2025 Winners
Well done to everyone that entered our 2025 photography competition. There were some excellent entries demonstrating skill and dedication by the photographers. Winners were decided on 18 December last year at the evening showcase event by the audience.
First prize went to Paul Marfell with his Willow Warbler on Gorse. The observant among you will note that the image is now heading both our Facebook page and the BUWG website:

Paul's comments:
Leeds-Liverpool Canal: A Winter visitor, a Willow Warbler on Gorse, showing itself nicely. It’s difficult to tell the difference between Chiffchaff and Willow Warbler but this one was singing its usual phrases where it seems to lose interest towards the end.

Judges Comments:
Outstanding shades of yellow, foreground interest/great subject/neutral background

Judges comments: Great image, looking right down camera is good, natural framing, depth and composition is good.
2nd prize went to Malcom Eden - Roe Deer in Low Wood.

Malcom's comments: The Roe Deer was photographed in February this year in Low Wood near Keighley, there were three of them present at the time, but I managed to get close to this one, I took it with my lens zoomed out to the maximum (600mm). Due to the light being behind the Deer the original pic looked almost like a silhouette but with a bit of tweaking I got this result and I was really pleased with how it turned out.
Eric Garbutt won 3rd prize with this image of a Vapourer Caterpillar

Eric's comments: Orgyia Antiqua, rustic tussock moth or Vapourer Caterpillar. It was nibbling away at a Rhubarb leaf in our garden in Cullingworth. I like to photograph wildlife, mainly birds but I have developed a liking for butterflies & moths.

Judges comments: Can’t tell which end is the head!! Beautiful insect, good sharpness, hole in the leaf is
funny
