Trench Meadows is an area of 4.7 hectares of lowland meadow just south of Shipley Glen.

It is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI)

What is there?

The grassland is rich in plant species, for example:

               Black Knapweed (Centaurea nigra)

               Devil’s Bit Scabious (Succisa pratensis)

               Common Spotted Orchid

               Bistort

These in turn encourage caterpillars and pollinating insects.

The meadow is managed by seasonal grazing.

This alone appears not enough to preserve the character of the site which is being encroached on by scrub oak.

I would go again to see…. the tremendous display of flowers and associated insects – probably at their best in June.
